Since 1991 I have taught in the School of Art+Design at the University of Illinois. Prior to that I taught for roughly six years in the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose State University, California College of Arts, and San Francisco City College. Due to my interest in the interplay of words and images, visual literacy, and the influence of technology on literacy in general, I hold a joint appointment in English Department. Below, I highlight two of my most satisfying accomplishments as an educator.

Writing with Video :: 2005 - present
Developed as an Advanced
Composition course, it engages students
in a comprehensive exploration of video as a rhetorical narrative
medium, with emphasis on the actual production of video work.
The course focuses on creativity, inquiry, reflection, communication, and composition. Each semester there are 4 - 6 undergraduate sections and 1 graduation section. Demand from students far exceeds seats available. [See TEDx talk: When Composition Comes Off the Page]
New
Media Program :: 2000 - 2007
Co-founded an MFA program dedicated
to exploring new technologies, new audiences, and new venues
as they relate to contemporary art practice. Participated in the development and approval of a BFA program in 2007. Served as progam chair prior to assuming duties as Associate Director of the School of Art+Design.
